BIG SUR, Calif. -

The 2016 Big Sur River Run has been cancelled due to the Soberanes Fire, according to event organizers.

The announcement was made Wednesday, explaining the race course runs through a portion of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, which is closed because of the fire. The race was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22.

Refunds will be available to those who pre-registered for the event, but event organizers said they will gladly take the fee as a donation to be distributed to the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Big Sur Health Center.

Anyone requesting a refund is asked to send an email to jaci@redshift.com.

Event organizers said the Big Sur International Marathon is offering a 10 percent race discount for the Half Marathon or the Pacific Grove Lighthouse 5K November 12-13, 2016 using the code BSRRD16.
