Father, son charged with stealing unclaimed funds

Associated Press - July 30, 2010 10:34 PM ET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A father and son are accused of stealing $1.6 million from residents who were owed money from California's unclaimed property fund.

Thomas Rodine, a 56-year-old from Carmichael, and 28-year-old Dustin Rodine of Citrus Heights were arraigned Friday in Sacramento County Superior Court.

They did not enter pleas to charges of embezzlement and submitting false claims to the state.

Attorney General Jerry Brown says the pair offered to recover unclaimed funds for dozens of people, then forged documents and used fake mailing addresses to keep the money.

Dustin Rodine's attorney, Scott Tedmon, denied the men embezzled any money.

The state says victims have been repaid $700,000 and are likely to get the rest of their money.
