MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - A Modesto man convicted in a drive-by shooting at a child's birthday party that killed a young father is heading to prison for at least 90 years.
Twenty-1-year-old Isidoro Mata was a juvenile when he and his friends were arrested in the June 2006 killing.
Authorities say Mata drove the car while 14-year-old Angel Cabanillas fired out the window into a crowd of partygoers. Twenty-8-year-old Manuel Rayas was killed.
The boys were Sureno gang members.
Cabanillas is serving 132 years to life in prison for first-degree murder. His older brother, who was in the back seat of the car, pleaded no contest to assault and weapons charges and got six years.
Judge Timothy Salter sentenced Mata on Friday to 117 years to life, but prosecutors say he'd be eligible for parole after serving 90.
