California's Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) announced that nine cities and counties will receive $208,840 in federal grants. The City of Monterey will receive $24,940 to prepare a historic context statement and historic survey for the area in and around the City's National Historic Landmark District. Monterey County will receive $25,000 to synthesize three existing agricultural context statements and prepare an Agricultural Resource Handbook to provide a framework for the consistent evaluation of agricultural properties both in Monterey and throughout the state.
California's Certified Local Government grants are awarded on a competitive basis and require a 40 percent local government match that can be provided using a combination of public funds, private funds, and allowable in-kind donations. A total of 15 applications for $347,490 were submitted this year.
The other cities receiving grants include Alameda, Calabasas, Los Angeles, Napa, Norco and Riverside.
