Greenfield Elementary and Vista Verde Middle Don't Make the Grade

Greenfield, CALIF- Twelve schools in Monterey County were listed in the bottom 5% for academic growth across the state. Two of them were in the Greenfield Union School District.

That's were Central Coast News caught up with the Superintended on Monday.

Greenfield Union School District has struggled with low achievement for nearly a decade. Superintendent Elida Garza told Central Coast News she started working on the district's curriculum three years ago, "Looking at the day to day lessons and making sure that our text books were in line.  We've been working on our pacing guides and things already to move our district forward," said Garza.

But she says change doesn't happen over night and hopes the work the district is doing now, will soon show, "It takes anywhere from two to three years because you have to put the things in place and then do the training for some of the stuff. Then you have to make sure that it's truly in line or go back and make more changes," said Garza.

Curriculum changes can't fix everything. Support from teachers and parents, is also key, "We can always do more because we haven't been as successful as we need to be," said Garza.

Administrators in Greenfield say they're not giving up on their students, no matter how long it takes to see improvement, "The hope is that one day we can become distinguished like title one schools. We've got to get all our kids on grade level and get them reading and doing math right where they need to be," said Garza.
