WASHINGTON (AP) - A Monterey company will pay a $25,000 civil penalty after it repeatedly imported children's products with high levels of lead.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday that Excelligence Learning Corp, doing business as Discount School Supply, has agreed to pay the amount in a settlement. The settlement resolves the commission's allegations that the company imported more than 33,000 units of children's products that contained high levels of lead in the paint between 2000 and 2007.
The imported products include shaving paint brushes, giant measuring charts and play mats, all recalled in 2007 and 2008.
In agreeing to the settlement, Excelligence, of Monterey, denies that it knowingly violated the federal lead paint ban, as the commission alleges.
