SALINAS, Calif. - Local fourth and fifth graders competed Saturday in an important lead-in spelling bee that could foreshadow who would represent Monterey County in the national championship.
Drawing from thousands of students in more than 30 elementary schools, top spellers from county schools came to San Benancio Middle School for the 25th Annual Monterey County Spelling Bee. While this competition is not affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, it serves as preparation for fourth and fifth graders as they head into the middle school grades.
Among Saturday's winners was fifth grader Emma Finch, who correctly spelled "bronchial" to eventually take home her top prize. Finch credited her parents as the key to her success.
"My parents did most of the work," Finch said. "When they found a word they didn't think I could spell they asked me if i could spell it."
The Lyceum of Monterey sponsors the competition.
