Local Couples Anxious About Prop. 8 Debate

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif.- The issue was contentious back in November and continues to be today. Although both Santa Cruz and Monterey counties voted no on Proposition 8, same-sex couples throughout the state do not have the right to marry at this time.

Thursday, the high court will listen to arguments in San Francisco on efforts to overturn the measure.  Attorney's from both sides sharpened their debate skills today after weeks of filing briefs and counter briefs.

One local Salinas couple says while their won't be in San Francisco tomorrow physically, their hearts couldn't be any closer.

Parents Toney Barber and Steve Scott are just one of the many couples fighting to keep their little family alive, while raising their 6-yr. old daughter Kristen, "if the supreme court decides to divorce us that is going to be a hard pill to swallow just thinking about that possibility it hurts," Toney said.

They say more than keeping their marriage legal, they want Kristen to be able to learn a very valuable life lesson. "To know that there are all types of people and opinions in this world and how she feels about herself and her family are the most important thing," Steve said.

The Supreme Court has 90-days to make a decision on whether to over turn the vote.
