SEASIDE, Calif.- The race asked Seaside to host a stage after Santa Cruz backed out, and Capitola said no thanks.
Both cities said there wasn't enough money in their budget or manpower in their staff after cuts to host the close to $200,000 event. But Seaside said they could make it work for $100,000, but didn't have the money either.
Amgen is even paying 70 percent of the cost, the rest, Mayor Ralph Rubio says will come from the Monterey County Business Council.
Both Santa Cruz and Capitola said they were not offered that deal by the AMGEN Tour of California.
Seaside hosted the AMGEN two years in a row, before it moved to Santa Cruz.
