Salmon Sport Fishing Set to Start in April

Posted:

MONTEREY, Calif. - Local wharf businesses are preparing for the start of salmon sport fishing on April 3, with hopes that the season will bring a economic boost not seen in the past three years.

Fishing boat charters Chris's and Randy's in Monterey say April 3 has been sold out on their dockets, as fishing enthusiasts continue to call Friday about openings throughout April.  Chris Arcoleo of Chris's Fishing Trips says reports have shown there are some 240,000 available salmon to be caught along the Pacific Coast; federal and state fishing managers have given no word as to the closure of the 2010 salmon fishing season.

A mid-April meeting by officials with the National Marine Fisheries Service may bring an official decision as to the status of the coming months.

Until then, Arcoleo is happy to get whatever business he can.

"You got one month for sure," Arcoleo said.  "After that I don't know what's going to happen."
