City Launches Buy Local Monterey

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif- The City of Monterey is launching its "Buy Local Monterey" campaign on Friday.

Buy Local Monterey" encourages everyone, especially local residents to shop, dine and enjoy entertainment in Monterey. The effort is designed to increase residents’ awareness of and preference for shopping in the City of Monterey.

"Every dollar spent in Monterey helps sustain the economic vitality of our community," said Mayor Chuck Della Sala. "By supporting our local businesses, we’re supporting the jobs these businesses provide to our friends and neighbors; the other local businesses that supply them and the jobs they create; services and programs provided by our City; and we’re helping the environment."

The City’s Finance Department estimates that if people diverted 10% of what they spend outside the City, and spent that 10% in Monterey instead, they would generate $500,000 in additional revenue for the General Fund. The General Fund finances many of the City services residents enjoy, such as Recreation and Library programs.

Buy Local Monterey" will feature a series of informational videos about the City’s business districts and what each has to offer local residents; videos on broader categories, such as hotels, restaurants and nightlife with locals’ specials; and free parking programs. The videos will be broadcast on The Monterey Channel on cable TV 25 and will be available on City’s YouTube Channel and FaceBook page. They also will be showcased on a new "Buy Local Monterey" web page on the City’s website at www.monterey.org/buylocal .

"Buy Local Monterey" is a partnership between the City of Monterey and the Cannery Row Company, Del Monte Center, Old Monterey Business Association, Fisherman’s Wharf Business Association, New Monterey Business Association and North Fremont Business Association.
