Traffic Signals Not Working in Santa Cruz, Work of Vandals

SANTA CRUZ, Calif- Vandals had the police and Santa Cruz Public Works personnel busy all over town Monday responding to reports of traffic signals not working.

In each of the cases, an unknown person accessed power lines inside signal poles. The suspect cut the lines inside the pole rendering the signal lights inoperable. The first cut line was found at approximately 1:45 AM at Water and River Streets.

Throughout the day, three more locations were found. Those included: Soquel Avenue at River Street, Broadway at San Lorenzo Boulevard, and Seabright Avenue at Soquel Avenue.

Public Works crews worked throughout the day to repair the damage and restore traffic signal operation. The estimated damage is over $3,000.

It is a Felony to tamper with any traffic control device when that tampering results in injury or death.
