Parent seriously injured in crash outside school

Associated Press - June 10, 2009 5:34 PM ET

LIVE OAK, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a woman who apparently mistook her gas pedal for the brake crashed into a parent and her 4-year-old-son outside a Live Oak school.

The parent has been airlifted to a trauma center with serious head injuries. Her son escaped with minor injuries.

Authorities say the driver, a woman in her 30s, was dropping off her child at Green Acres Elementary School on Wednesday morning when the crash occurred.

The 1997 Subaru Legacy lurched forward out of its parking space, rammed through a fence and ended up on a sidewalk. Authorities say a post from the chain-link fence struck the victim in the forehead and pinned down the boy.

The driver and her child were not seriously injured.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
