SANTA BARBARA - A stark contrast from the surrounding charred hillsides, Klaus Graff and Lynelle Paulick's home was virtually untouched by the Jesusita Fire.
They credit preparation and a set of sprinklers on the roof.
"It saturated the area for about a 50 foot radius around the house," says Graf. "It would be like trying to light a match in your shower."
Although it was under mandatory evacuation, the couple never left their home, even when flames reached their own backyard.
"The embers started flying it was like being pelted in a snow storm, but with burning embers," says Lynelle Paulick. "After a while there was no emotion left. It was like, we're going to survive or not."
Fire crews commended the couple for saving their home but don't recommend others do the same.
Graf and Paulick tell KCOY CBS 12 that the risk was worth it to them.
"We're happy we made the choices we did, we have our house."
